Seasons of Life III, Summer Delights by Mark Keathley

The change of the seasons is an exciting time. I usually imagine the earth in its new place in relation to the sun, and smile at how and why things begin to change.  Here in South Texas, the summer season hits like a wave of moist heat, and we all look at each other and say, "it's here" and run inside (where the air conditioning is), or if we have time, we run to the water to cool off. School is out and the crops are growing, or it is time for a vacation -- all this says it is time enjoy natures way of making the heat tolerable.  So head to the nearest stream or lake for a dip and cool the senses.

In my Seasons of Life series, the common elements in each painting are the Smokey Mountain streams and the black bears. Here the cubs have strayed from the near protection of their mother and are "exploring" the woods, like I used to do as a kid. I would spend hours with my BB gun or 22 rifle down at Jack's creek in East Texas, and would almost always end up in the water. Those were carefree days and I  never knew what I would run across on those adventures because life is always full of surprises. So take time to explore, to relax, and try to get lost in the big out doors this summer and maybe you, too, might enjoy a few Summer Delights.

Whenever I painted this painting, I was thinking about the special relationship people share with our Savior. Like delicate lambs exploring the grassy fields of the Earth, humans face many uncertainties, challenges, and temptations in life. Like the little lambs, we sometimes can be led astray by these things, and no one else can lead us back on the right path beside our Savior, who keeps us in His loving and caring embrace. He is our shepherd, and if we listen to his callings and come to Him, he will keep us forever safe and loved.

In this painting, I imagined the tender moment shared between the Good Shepherd and a lamb who lost his way. It makes me warm and fuzzy inside to think of Christ holding me close just like this little lamb!

This is one of the happiest painting I think I’ve done. Everything about this just makes me smile, from the colors to the composition to the memories the subjects bring. I grew up in the Midwest where farms, old farm equipment, and deer were everywhere! This very large deer family has come to the farmers overgrown pumpkin patch to find something to eat. The farmer has been busy all day stacking his fall harvest into corn shocks and has retreated to his workshop in the barn to finish up his last chores before dinner at his wife’s beautifully lit home. The deer however have spotted you, the viewer, and almost seem to be asking you for a treat! With today being Halloween, the perfectly fitting title me and my wife decided on could be no other than “Trick or Treat”.  acrylic on stretched linen
