Native Sun by Mark Keathley Mankind is an awesome species - nobility is found in every corner of the globe. Goodness and honor can be found in any nation, whether half naked or dressed in top hat and tails, it is simply a matter of internal examination - for every man wants to be treated with respect, and, therein, one knows that others desire this as well. Honor this principle "within" and societies will have some order and dignity. Most Native American Cultures valued honor and respect of others and found peace within their groups. Each one finding a place and purpose to support the clan led to unity and cooperation, which was a vital part in survival. Petty differences had to be put aside and the decision of the elders was accepted. Native Sun is a depiction of young warriors, banded together on a mission to support their people. The effect of the glaring light in NATIVE SUN causes our senses to respond to the intensity of who they were as proud and courageous men. Whether they had "our code" of conduct is of no consequence. They respected each other, they fought battles for survival, and hunted for the clan. They were MEN, created in the image of God with a spiritual sense about life. Some found the Truth about their creator, and others ignored it, but they were NATIVE sons.

Boundaries by Mark Keathley New Page 2

Across the landscape of time, tribes have roamed and settled in areas so that they could live by the customs which had been handed down to them and be free in their pursuits and daily lives. It is what causes the spread of civilization - that desire to set up a new world where "it will be different" and "we can be free." The world as these tribes knew it was only what they experienced and the "boundaries" of their world were only as far as they could travel. Territorial disputes might have been common with a neighboring tribe where a brief skirmish would determine the outcome and save hunting ground or tribal land, but nothing could prepare these groups of Native Americans for the tide of settlers which would wash over the land - changing their lives forever. You can use your imagination to picture what these brave warriors were coming to confront, but Boundaries is not about the clash between tribes, or the coming hoards of white settlers; it is about the determination we have to hang on to life as we know it. For centuries, powerful men have wanted to control the behavior of people. Unjust tactics, propaganda, and force have all been used to take freedoms away from the people so that a few can control the wealth and power of nations. This painting is about taking a stand against the forces that would change our lives forever. A line in the sand needs to be drawn or the freedoms we enjoy in our nation will disappear and we, too, will find ourselves living out our lives on a government reservation.

Rise Above by Mark Keathley

I was honored to paint the featured work of art for this wonderful western art community and the patrons who enjoy the best western art event in America! I couldn't have been more thrilled with the fall arts festival auction having set a new record sale for the festival and for me personally when two very interested bidders took the price over the top- $77,500 !!!! Thank you! Having so many family and friends here to share the moment added twice the joy! Thank you! I also got to meet so many amazing artists and art lovers - all the best to you all!

Artist Notes:

As we survey the political and social landscape which is changing fast around us, we often don’t really know what to do. Most of us have a gathering of friends that we talk to about such issues, those of like mind, but the conversation rarely leads us to peace. In my own life, as I have seen the abuse and victimization of others on TV (watching in horror as the fire of riots breaks out in senseless ways), I have only found one place where peace can be found. I close my eyes and picture myself high above sitting with my best friend, Jesus, where the conflict looks small and distant.

I asked him what I should do about that “down there,” and he said, “Do as I did. Let love reign.”

“How do I do that?” I asked.

“I will show you when the time comes. Just stick with me.” It wasn’t a voice I heard but an imaginary conversation that I believe is inspired by His Spirit within each of us. “I will give you what to say when the moment arrives. Let faith manifest in love. I am with you.”

You can see the concern on their faces. The landscape is changing before them so they retreat to a high place and sit quietly waiting for the moment when they will be called to “RISE ABOVE.”

Night Diving by Jess Wathen

• SUSPENDED •

Night seems mysterious, yet so alluring. A whole new world stirs and bustles. Nocturnal creatures emerge, some of which to hunt. The owl sees in the dark, beyond the veil of deception and illusion, discovering what’s kept hidden. Under the glow of the night sky, this owl is poised, prepared to dive to sate its appetite.

Endearing by Abraham Hunter Buddy Artist Notes

On a misty spring morning deep in a hardwood forest, the early morning light casts its gentle rays through the canopy of leaves and softly illuminates a newborn whitetail fawn. This curious little guy has seen you and is greeting you with his inquisitive stare. His white spotted coat blends in with the dapples of sunlight and the freshly bloomed spring wildflowers. Soon, he will jump up and run off to find his mother.  I've tried to capture this precious moment in nature for you to enjoy forever. I hope this Endearing Fawn blesses you with its beauty, and that you never take for granted all that Our Creator has so graciously given us..
